Day 1: Departure from the U.S.
Begin your journey with an evening flight to Santiago, Chile, setting the stage for your Patagonian adventure.
Day 2: Santiago to Puerto Varas
Arriving in Santiago this morning, transfer to a connecting flight to Puerto Montt. From there, journey to the stunning Cumbres Puerto Varas Hotel on the edge of Lago Llanquihue. The lake is dominated by the iconic, snow-covered Osorno Volcano. After settling in, spend the afternoon exploring or relaxing before meeting on of your guides, Maria, for a welcome dinner.
Day 3: Chaitén to Lago Lonconao
After breakfast, take a short flight to Chaitén, where your adventure truly begins. A scenic drive through Patagonia’s majestic landscapes leads to the Futaleufú River. Tackle your first Class IV rapids before arriving at the charming Lonconao Cottages, your home for the next three nights. Each cottage offers spacious rooms, private bathrooms, and a serene lakeside view. Unwind in the cozy dining hall with panoramic views and a crackling fire.
Day 4: Espolón River Adventure
Start the day with a picturesque mountain bike ride to the clear turquoise waters of the Espolón River. After a quick paddling lesson, navigate its thrilling Class II-III rapids in inflatable kayaks. Prefer to relax a little less adventure, guided rafts are available for a more laid-back experience. Return to Lonconao Cottages for the evening.
Day 5: Futaleufú Rapids
Spend the day rafting exhilarating Class IV rapids along the Upper Futaleufú Canyon. Stop for lunch at Zeta Rapid, where you can take an optional plunge into the swirling blue pool below. Depending on water conditions, Class V enthusiasts may tackle the thrilling Inferno Canyon after passing a swim test. Wind down back at the cottages.
Day 6: Rio Azul and Peuma Lodge
Cycle along a remote path to reach the pristine Rio Azul. Paddle through its stunning Class III waters surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks. At day’s end, arrive at Peuma Lodge, a hidden gem nestled in a lush valley. Relax in wood-fired hot tubs, savor gourmet meals, and retreat to heated cabins with private baths.
Day 7: Rapids and Rio Blanco Slot Canyon
Navigate a mix of Class III-IV rapids to the confluence with the Rio Blanco. Here, canyoneer up the magical Rio Blanco filled with crystal-clear pools, cascading waterfalls, and surreal white rock formations. After lunch, hit the river again for more rapids, with an optional Class V challenge for thrill-seekers.
Day 8: Lago Obsession
Hike through an ancient forest to the secluded Lago Obsession, a dazzling blue lake cradled by dramatic granite peaks. Explore its serene waters by kayak or paddleboard, soaking in breathtaking views and possibly spotting condors overhead. For a less strenuous option, enjoy a shorter forest hike or relax at the lodge with a sauna or massage.
Day 9: Lower Futaleufú and Yelcho Lodge
Today’s journey features a string of thrilling Class IV rapids on the Lower Futaleufú, culminating in expansive vistas of glaciers and towering peaks. In the afternoon, transfer to Yelcho Lodge on the shore of Lago Yelcho. This idyllic retreat offers cozy cabins and an optional glacier hike. Share a farewell dinner to reflect on your unforgettable week.
Note: The final two rapids are class 5 and optional.
Day 10: Return to Santiago
Fly from Chaitén to Puerto Montt, where Maria will assist with connecting flights to Santiago. Take the evening to reflect on your adventure or explore Santiago at your leisure.
Day 11: Return Home
Arrive back in the U.S. or your home country, carrying memories of Patagonia’s beauty and excitement.

- Nights: 1 (first night)
- Description: Located just minutes from downtown Puerto Varas, this hotel offers breathtaking views of Lago Llanquihue and the majestic Osorno Volcano. Built with local materials like wood and stone, the hotel blends elegance and comfort to create an inviting atmosphere.

Lonconao Lodge
- Nights: 3 (nights 2, 3 & 4)
- Description: Cozy, heated cottages set along the shores of Lago Lonconao. Each features two bedrooms, a shared living space, and a small kitchen. The lodge offers stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains, complemented by a “Great Room” for dining with a fireplace and large windows. Activities include swimming, kayaking, mountain biking, and hiking.

Peuma Lodge
- Nights: 3 (nights 5, 6 & 7)
- Description: Situated on 800 acres of pristine wilderness, this eco-lodge features nine uniquely designed, heated cabins with private baths. Guests can enjoy the main lodge’s fireplace, a deck with hot tubs, and the serene surroundings of old-growth forests. The nearby Lago Obsession offers opportunities for paddleboarding and kayaking.

Yelcho Patagonia Lodge
- Nights: 1 (night 8)
- Description: Perched on the edge of Lago Yelcho, this lodge boasts incredible views of glacier-topped peaks. Activities like sea kayaking and glacier hiking are easily accessible from this location.
- Amenities: Lakeside hot tub and a small bar.

The trip includes seven nights at boutique lodges such as Peuma, Lonconao, and Yelcho, as well as one night at the luxurious Cumbres Puerto Varas Hotel. All meals during the adventure are provided, featuring gourmet cuisine accompanied by Chilean wine and beer. Guests will enjoy private en-suite bathrooms, access to hot tubs and saunas, and professional-grade rafting equipment. Transportation within the Futaleufú Valley is included, along with expert instruction and guiding. Activities abound, with options for rafting, kayaking, biking, hiking, and more. Personalized guide service ensures a tailored experience, with a remarkable 3:1 guide-to-guest ratio for optimal attention and safety.
Not Included
The trip cost does not include international airfare to Puerto Montt or the round-trip domestic flight from Puerto Montt to Chaitén, which incurs a separate $250 charge. Transfers from Puerto Montt Airport to the hotel are also not included and cost approximately $25. Optional expenses, such as professional massage services, fly fishing gear, and gratuities (suggested at 10% of the trip cost), are additional. Any extra costs associated with late arrivals, including extra hotel nights or charters, are the responsibility of the guest.
Packing for your river trip
You will be provided with a suggested packing list after signing up for the trip. The key equipment is being able to layer to adjust to the changes conditions. Its particularly important to have good rain gear while in Patagpnia as conditions change quickily. Here are some rain gear, footwear, and other clothing options we recommend.
Getting There
Via Chile:
First evening: Departure from U.S. / Arrival in Santiago
Fly overnight from the United States to Santiago, Chile.
Day 2: Santiago to Puerto Montt / Puerto Varas
Take a flight from Santiago to Puerto Montt, followed by a taxi ride to the charming town of Puerto Varas. Nestled on the shores of Lago Llanquihue and framed by the snow-covered Osorno Volcano, Puerto Varas offers some of South America’s most breathtaking landscapes. Check into the elegant Hotel Cumbres, which features stunning views of the lake and volcano. In the evening, meet your guide, Maria, in the hotel lobby for a trip orientation and a welcome dinner in town.
Alternative option: If you’re unable to depart early, you can arrive on Saturday morning instead. This involves skipping the Puerto Varas stay and meeting the group directly at Paloma Airport in Puerto Montt by 11:00 AM. Several international flights into Santiago allow for this adjustment.
Day 3: Morning flight (50 minutes) from Puerto Varas to Chaitén, followed by a scenic two-and-a-half-hour bus journey to the Futaleufú Valley.
