Charter & Custom Expeditions
When a trip requires flexibility or hands‑on coordination, we step in to design and lead custom expeditions built around your goals.
Flexible & Customizable
We’ve been designing and leading private, charter, and custom expeditions for over 30 years. Chartering a trip allows your group to travel exclusively with the people you choose, while custom planning gives you flexibility to adjust pace, logistics, and trip structure.
Depending on the destination, this may include options such as adding layover days, changing camp styles, or tailoring daily travel to better match your group’s goals. Our role is to help shape the experience so it works for the people on the trip, not just the itinerary on paper.
Charter Expeditions
While many groups reach out to us about Grand Canyon charters, private and exclusive trips are often more accessible on rivers in Utah, Oregon, California, and Idaho due to permit availability, group size requirements, and cost. On some rivers, as few as 10–12 participants are needed to run a trip exclusively, or groups may choose to cover the minimum number of spaces to keep the trip private.
Planning farther in advance—especially for high‑demand destinations like the Grand Canyon—generally provides more options and flexibility. Booking a charter or private trip through Rivers & Oceans costs the same as booking directly with the outfitter.
Custom Expeditions
Some groups want a greater level of involvement than standard departures allow. In those cases, we step in to coordinate details that go beyond an outfitter’s typical scope, while continuing to work closely with trusted partners.
This may include customizing logistics, coordinating special group needs, or providing select Rivers & Oceans guides to ensure continuity and smooth execution. Our guides bring decades of experience on rivers and occasionally coastal and ocean environments. They are chosen for their judgment, adaptability, and grounded, authentic approach to expedition travel.
Our goal is simple: to help your group run a well‑thought‑out expedition that feels cohesive, realistic, and grounded in experience.
While most private groups use our service to help them find the right trip and outfitter, some people want additional help or to have trips customized to a greater degree than a outfitters like to do on their own. In these cases we step-in to insure your desired details are planned and implemented while working with our partner outfitters. Many times on these trips we provide some of our own guides to insure everything runs smoothly.
Our guides have decades of experience working most of the rivers of the west. Furthermore, we take pride in our spirit of adventure and hospitality. Put our knowledge to work planning and facilitating your group’s best custom adventure.

Best Family Trip Ever!
“This trip is our family’s favorite, EVER. Being on the river with 3 generations, no digital devices, just enjoying each other in such a magical environment. The rapids, the warm water, the wild life, the idyllic camps, the yummy food, and of course the guides, every aspect was beyond our expectations. The guides are friends who clearly cared about us and set a great example of what it is to be a human on this planet. We can’t wait to travel again with Rivers and Oceans.”

Aaron has been leading trips for over 25 years on some of the most prestigious rivers in the world. Ten years ago he worked his first custom rafting tour with Robby on the Selway River. In addition, they both enjoyed the problem solving required to maximize the experience for each unique group and trip.
